Covering an area of 52,800 km² the Central Kalahari
Game Reserve is the second largest game reserve in the world.
The landscape is mainly flat with salt pans with vegetated sand dunes.
The Central Kalahari was traditionally inhabited by the nomadic Bushmen
or San people, and is home to wild game such as warthog, various antelope
who are well adapted to the semi-arid desert conditions such as gemsbok,
eland, kudu and red hartebeest as the "blue gnu" also known
as the blue wildebeest and the elegant giraffe. who live of the larger
trees found in some areas of the park. Predators which live in the reserve
include cheetah, leopard, lion, brown hyena and the African wild dog.
Deception Valley is the best known of the four fossilized
rivers running through the park.
